Fatsia

Fatsia japonica 'Spider's Web' (June 13, 2008)

Now and then a truly spectacular plant finds its way into the nursery trade, and Fatsia japonica ‘Spider’s Web’ is a real winner. Like its green cousin, this incredible Fatsia will eventually grow to over 8 feet, and features the same big, tropical looking 16 inch wide, deeply lobed fan-shaped leaves. Unlike the standard variety, however, the shiny green leaves on ‘Spider’s Web’ are adorned with heavy white web-like speckling throughout. All Fatsias require well-drained soil to flourish. They are occasionally bothered by sucking insects resulting in an ugly sooty mold that grows on the honeydew excreted from the bugs. If this happens, you can easily control it by blasting the bugs off the back of the leaves with a powerful spray of water. Don’t plant ‘Spider’s Web’, or any Fatsia for that matter, in a sunny location; the foliage will turn an ugly yellow. The beauty of this plant is that it thrives in deep shade. Even the darkest corner will be illuminated with the bright white variegation of the spectacular leaves.
