The vines of this hardy, non-clinging clematis emerge dark purple and remain dark until they flower (small, white and star-shaped flowers) in late spring. At that time, the vines are 5 feet tall. After flowering, the leaves green up so when flowering is over, cut the plant to one inch. The vine will grow back dark purple to repeat the process. The foliage color is best in full-sun. Stake it eary on or grow it against a plant that will hold it up. Otherwise it will fall on and smother small nearby plants.
