Paeonia mascula (May 16, 2008)

Paeonia mascula (coral peony) hails from Southern Europe, Turkey, Greece and some Mediterranean Islands. It has unusual attractive rounded leaves that emerge purple-red; then turn attractive shades of yellow and red in fall. The single flowers are deep pink, with yellow stamens followed by showy scarlet seed pods. Long lived as are all peonies, coral peony can live for close to 100 years, but unlike most herbacious peonies that are hardy as rocks, this species is only hardy to about -10 or possibly zero. All herbacious peonies require fertile, well drained soil. Work in plenty of compost before planting. If your peony stops blooming, it's usually due to lack of sun, planting too deep, or too much mulch over the crown of the plant.
