Corydalis is a spring blooming member of the poppy family. The blue flowering varieties Corydalis flexuosa are from China. The first of the blue flowering Corydalis to become available was 'Blue Panda', but many of the other varieties such as this one (C. flexuosa 'Pere David') are easier to grow. The blue flowering Corydalis prefer a bright shady location with moist, woodsy soil. They can be grown in full-sun with adequate watering. These plants are hardy to about -20 degrees F. and form big clumps over time. Make new clumps by dividing in fall. After blooming is over, cut the foliage down to about an inch from the ground. Feed with alfalfa meal and the plant will grow back nicely without the usual powdery mildew problems. Usually they only bloom once per season. Keep an eye out for new spectacular red flowering varieties that should start showing up in nurseries within the next couple of years.
